Similar names are easy to shorten incorrectly. Use the full current facility name and exact destination when coordinating work.
A familiar fragment can be ambiguous
Northwell’s public locations overview lists North Shore University Hospital, South Shore University Hospital and several Long Island Jewish named facilities. These are distinct names, not interchangeable abbreviations. A message saying “the shore hospital” or “LIJ” may be insufficient for a visitor, delivery or cross-site meeting. Preserve the full name until the receiving person confirms the intended destination.
Separate the facility from the room
A hospital name does not identify a building entrance, administrative office, campus room or remote meeting link. Ask the host for the exact destination and access instructions. A public location listing is useful orientation, but it should not be treated as a live employee-entry guide. Staff-only routes and arrangements require the applicable workplace instructions.

Use a destination card
For a work visit, record the full facility name, address supplied by the host, building or room, arrival time and verified contact. Keep access codes out of broadly shared calendar descriptions. If the host changes the location, update the card and the invitation together so the old shorthand does not continue circulating in a separate message thread.
Check copied names carefully
Autocompletion and reused invitations can carry an old address into a new event. Compare the complete destination with the current host confirmation before arranging travel. Do not choose a map result solely because its name resembles the abbreviation in the message. If two candidates remain plausible, ask one targeted question instead of deciding from proximity or familiarity.
Three public names worth keeping separate
- Long Island Jewish Medical Center
- Long Island Jewish Forest Hills
- Long Island Jewish Valley Stream
Northwell’s locations overview lists these as distinct named facilities. A calendar entry that keeps only “LIJ” loses information. If your work requires a visit, retain the full intended name and get the specific destination from the host. The public list does not supply your room, staff entrance or access authorization. Likewise, North Shore University Hospital and South Shore University Hospital should not be collapsed into an ambiguous “Shore” label when coordinating across teams.
A practical coordination example
Imagine a colleague writes that a training discussion is “at LIJ” and attaches a public hospital page. The next step is not to infer the room or employee entrance. Ask which named facility, which building and which host will receive attendees. That clarification is a small task that can prevent a late arrival without requiring any private organizational directory.
Keep the correction reusable
When ambiguity is resolved, use the full confirmed name in the final calendar entry and any follow-up note. Avoid publishing an unofficial nickname as if it were the institution’s preferred name. The goal is consistent coordination across teams that may know different shorthand, especially when people work at several sites or are visiting a location for the first time.
